Geographic Position of Virginia
Materials:
Obejctive: The student will be able to label and identify Virginia and it’s bordering states, as well as the major bodies of water that surround Virginia.
- Map of Virginia and bordering states (teacher copy)
- Map of Virginia and bordering states (blank student copy)
- Overhead document camera
Obejctive: The student will be able to label and identify Virginia and it’s bordering states, as well as the major bodies of water that surround Virginia.
- Bring up a map of the US overhead camera and point out Virginia on the map. Ask the students if they know what states border Virginia. Explain what the term “border” means. Have them raise their hands to volunteer to come up and point to the states that border Virginia.
- Ask the students what else they notice about Virginia’s placement on the map. What is surrounded on one side by? Explain that even though water is not a state, it is also important to note that parts of Virginia are bordered by water. Have them raise their hands to volunteer to come up and point out the names of the bodies of water that surround Virginia.
- Have the students label a map with the states and bodies of water to turn in to the teacher.
- Put the students in groups of five and explain to them that they are going to use bodily poses/ expressions to “be” the states and bodies of water and show where they are in reference to Virgnia on the map (kinesthetic).
